Oldie but goodie
There is something to be said about older games and LAN parties. They kick ass!’
At the last LAN party we busted out and oldie call Homeworld. It’s and RTS set in space, you can you can choose from two races. Once the game starts, the race is on to gather resources (asteroids, dust clouds) and build your fleet. The type and class of ships are determined by what you invest into Research. The more research, the more options for building bigger, stronger ships.
There are newer game that are similar (Sins of a Solar Empire) Homeworld, and Homworld2 do not have a steep learning curve. Two player, including me, had never played the game but found it easy to catch on to and were able to participate without getting our asses handed to us.
In summary, some of the less complex, older games really are well suited to LAN parties. Easy to learn and quick to get into action keeps the LAN experience high energy.
